Community Service

Capitol Hill Day School's Community Service Committee organizes projects that take advantage of our School's adult network to benefit our greater community and provide a positive model for our children. Parent participation is our key to success. The Community Service Committee meets four times during the academic year. New members, and their ideas, are welcome. If you are interested, contact Mary Beth Moore, the staff liaison, at 202-386-9920, or via e-mail: marybethm@chds.org. Annual projects include: - Extra Lunch & Groceries Program. We collect lunches and non-perishable groceries for Friendship House clients every Wednesday that school is in session. Occasionally we will send home brown lunch bags as reminders. Please remember that groceries are greatly needed. For information, or to volunteer, contact Joan Carmichael, 202-484-0146.
- Fannie Mae Walk for the Homeless. Capitol Hill Day School families will participate on November 22nd in the largest walkathon in the country that raises funds and increases awareness about homelessness. Registration at www.helpthehomelessdc.org allows you to designate your local beneficiary organization. For more information, contact Mary Beth Moore, 202-386-9920.
- Holiday Gifts for Children. Once again, we collected new and slightly used toys in December, which were distributed by the Perry Community Service Center and Our Place. For more information, contact Mary Beth Moore, 202-386-9920.
- Recycling Project. On February 18 we will collect "recyclables." Past collections have included books, housewares, backpacks, linens, rubber bands, videos, eyeglasses, soccer gear, trophies, and lunch boxes. To make suggestions and volunteer, contact Mary Beth Moore, 202-386-9920.
- Clothing, Shoes, and Accessories. The amazing annual collection and distribution to local organizations will take place on Wednesday, April 15th. Bread for the City (1525 7th Street, NW and 1640 Good Hope Road, SE) will accept contributions any weekday. For information and to volunteer, contact Mary Beth Moore, 202-386-9920.
- Anacostia River Cleanup. In conjunction with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, we will again encourage families to participate in the Anacostia River cleanup on a designated day in April. Those who have participated in the past have marveled at the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction among both participating students and their parents.
