With the approval of the Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA), Capitol Hill Day School looks forward to proceeding with its plans for a wing to the Dent Building.
The new construction will add approximately 50% more space to the School, one-third of which is beneath the ground. It will touch the historic Dent Building with a glass hyphen, set back beyond the windows of the third and fifth grade classrooms.
The underground multi-purpose room will extend to the alley. Level One of the addition extends to within ten feet of the alley. Its roof is the same level as the garden behind the annex at 214 South Carolina Avenue. Levels Two and Three of the wing go back twenty feet from the alley.
The main entrance to the School will be in the new wing. People will enter on the street level. There will be play equipment for the youngest children outside the entrance, also on the street level.
Level One
A School receptionist greets everyone who enters the building. In the entrance lobby there is an elevator which connects all the floors in the new wing as well as a stairwell. The three prekindergarten and kindergarten classrooms are all located on Level One -- two of them are in the new wing. In the Dent Building, the present Kindergarten classroom becomes a small group workspace during the day, and an After School Program classroom after 3:00 pm.
The "Underground" The underground level in the new wing features a multipurpose room which will serve as assembly space, physical education space for young children, and space for myriad other activities such as drama classes, math and science fairs, and rainy-day recess.
Level Two
On Level Two in the new wing will be an upper grade science room, a faculty lounge, and offices for the Head of School. The annex at 214 South Carolina Avenue will be used for administrative purposes.
Level Three
The French and Spanish classrooms will move from the 214 South Carolina Avenue building to the new wing and together will serve as the eighth grade homeroom. The upper grade math classroom will be housed in the new wing. The technology lab moves from the loft in the Dent Building to the site of the current upper grade science room.
Level Four
With the movement of some upper grade classrooms out of the current loft, Level Four of the Dent Building can house an enlarged humanities classroom / seventh grade homeroom, and a new upper grade literature classroom.
This new wing, and the small and large classrooms and spaces they contain, will assure the continued excellence of the School's program.
