About the School

In a complex and often chaotic world, Capitol Hill Day School offers a calm and thoughtful educational environment for children and their families.  It is a joyful and supportive place, a place of academic excellence, and above all, a school that celebrates learning as a lifelong process.   Children view teachers as allies, they are encouraged to work collaboratively, and they learn that each of us brings unique strengths and talents to a community.  This is a School that respects and values individual and intellectual differences.   The School community is small enough to nurture the academic and social needs of each student, yet large enough for each child to share his or her strengths, values, and experience with people from a variety backgrounds and circumstances, with civility, openness and respect.

The CHDS faculty is knowledgeable about the developmental and educational needs of children, and passionate about teaching.   From prekindergarten through eighth grade, subjects are studied in depth and classes are often designed around a central theme or unifying question.   We believe that children learn best when they find meaning in their work and when they are actively engaged in the process of discovery.  CHDS students are taught to think critically, ask questions, and view mistakes as an important part of the learning process.  Teachers work together across grades to ensure a smooth transition from the early childhood to the elementary classrooms, and ultimately to middle school, where the older students are nurtured and viewed as leaders, preparing them for high school and beyond.

Whether you are the parent of a student currently enrolled at Capitol Hill Day School, or a parent who is thinking of applying to the School, I encourage you to look through our website, read the School's Mission Statement and Guideposts, learn about the many facets of the School's day and after school programs, its Summer Camp offerings, and the essential and valued participation of parents in the life of the School.  For over 40 years, the students, parents, and teachers of Capitol Hill Day School have worked together to fulfill the School's primary mission "to provide an education that engages students in the process of learning, with the aim of helping them become thoughtful, caring young people."  I invite you to walk through the School to see firsthand the students who are actively engaged in this journey.

Capitol Hill Day School is an exciting and diverse community of students, families, and teachers - past, present, and future - and I am honored to be a part of this wonderful place.
