Capitol Hill Day School students are known and nurtured, challenged and supported, and taught to think critically and independently. During the high school application process, the School works in partnership with parents and 8th graders as they explore high school options. They are guided in this process by the School's High School Advisor, who helps students find schools that are well-suited to their academic and social strengths and goals. CHDS graduates are confident in their academic abilities, socially adept, and flourish at a wide range of rigorous high schools, including private and public, single sex and coed, boarding and day, parochial and independent.
The work of the High School Advisor includes:
Parent Meetings: The Advisor meets with parents as a group and individually throughout the application process.
Updates and Reminders: Parents receive frequent updates and reminders about high school admissions events and application deadlines.
Student Support: The Advisor meets with 8th graders to discuss the application process in general and the interview process in particular, including conducting mock interviews;
Faculty Collaboration: The Advisor coordinates and reviews faculty recommendations, and works with faculty to help students handle high school decisions with respect for each other's privacy and choices.
SSAT Review: Faculty members and 8th graders meet weekly from September through early December for SSAT preparation. They take practice tests in class and at home, and learn specific strategies for taking the SSAT.
Alumni Guidance: The Advisor hosts a fall Alumni Forum at which eighth graders and their parents ask recent alums about their experiences during the application process, as well as their academic and social preparation and transition.
A Personal Touch: The Advisor has developed strong relationships with high school admissions staff, and meets individually with them in support of CHDS applicants. Everyone at CHDS is very proud of the excellent reputation enjoyed by CHDS 8thgraders, whose poise, maturity, and academic preparation are noted every year by high school admissions staff.
Jane Angarola has served as High School Advisor at Capitol Hill Day School since 1999. She began working as a part-time assistant to the Head of School in 1997, gradually taking on communications and constituent outreach responsibilities. In addition to her role as High School Advisor, Jane is the Director of Communications and Marketing. She was also an active parent volunteer from 1992 when her daughter enrolled, through 2006 when her twin sons graduated from CHDS.
Each year, CHDS graduates enroll at 10 to 15 different high schools, and are accepted at many more.
We are very proud of our alumni/ae, and the excellent college choices available to them.
