Message from Admissions:
The first Middle School Information Night was a great success. Visiting parents and students had the opportunity to visit classrooms, talk to teachers, current parents, and students. Teachers from English, history, math, science, French & Spanish, presented their respective curricula and demonstrated sample projects and student portfolios. Jason Gray gave a summary of the Middle School focusing on the academic program as well as age-appropriate social emotional needs of middle school students. Tom Sellevaag and Beth Gryczewski presented an overview of the teaching philosophy and how it translates into the day-to-day experience for our students to help them problem solve, think critically, and learn to work collaboratively as well as independently. Lisa Sommers talked with visitors about the variety of field trips in the Middle School and how they relate directly to class themes, and Jane Angarola described the high school placement process.
However, in true CHDS fashion, our students stole the show. As part of the drama class, Bianca and Sarah performed a scene from Shakespeare that had the audience mesmerized. Brittany, Eleanor, and Grace served as tour guides and shared their personal experiences and stories. Chapeau to all of you!
I would also like to thank the parent volunteers, Dana Carstarphen, Leslie Tolf, and Kim Smith, who attended and shared a parent perspective. I owe an extra special thanks to Dana for providing refreshments and for her personal attention to our guests.
We only recently decided to add this event in mid-December. I am grateful to have excellent colleagues and teachers who are supportive of our admissions efforts.
On a final note, please enjoy reading some of the Middle School teacher testimonials that came about as we planned this event and that were distributed last night.
My sincere thanks to everyone who helped make this event a success.
