Our students are involved in a myriad of lessons and activities that quietly add up to a rich program of community service in and beyond the School. For example:
Students throughout the School contribute canned goods to a Thanksgiving food drive for Friendship House, a neighborhood social services agency. The fourth graders consolidate and deliver the food, and see where it goes once it leaves their hands.
Members of the School community hang hats, gloves, and mittens on the Holiday Giving Tree. Sixth graders deliver the donations to Friendship House and learn how they are distributed to children who need them.
Every Wednesday, the entire School community participates in the "extra lunch" program. Children and parents make and assemble an extra lunch (or two) at home, which they bring to School to be collected for Friendship House clients. Bags of non-perishable groceries are also delivered for the food bank. Parent volunteers assemble and deliver the food.
Service becomes an integral part of the curriculum as students mature. Seventh graders perform in-school service each week, helping teachers and staff with a variety of activities from helping with younger children to stuffing envelopes to emptying the School's recycling bins. The eighth graders serve a meal a week at the Church of the Brethren soup kitchen, and visit and play with children in Friendship House's day care center.
Seeking to model community service-oriented behavior for their children, Capitol Hill Day School parents formed a Community Service Committee which offers further opportunities for families to participate in community outreach through the School.
