Learning is challenging, engaging, and playful, with students learning across subjects, not in isolated silos.

Teachers emphasize social justice and prepare students to become engaged citizens by exploring connections between the classroom and the larger world.

We reinvented the traditional field trip, with 300+ field experiences annually.

Students interact confidently with recognized experts - scientists, artists, authors, farmers, museum docents, engineers, and more.

A School for Children

Our teachers are experts in the ages they teach, supporting each child's social, emotional, and academic growth.

We put children at the center of their learning during the vital childhood years from PreK to 8th grade.

In a safe, nurturing environment, children grow at their own pace, take age-appropriate risks, and learn essential collaboration and critical thinking skills.

A Strong Foundation

The Upper Grade Head works with 7th and 8th Grade families to find high schools that best support each child's strengths and needs.

Every year, our graduates move on to 10-15 different high schools in the Washington area and beyond.

Our alumni are confident learners who thrive in college, enjoy professional success, and give back to their communities.

Beyond the Basics – Arts, Language, PE, and more

Visual and performing arts, French and Spanish, library, PE, and service learning aren’t “extras.” They’re essential and fully integrated parts of every student’s learning, from PreK through 8th grade.

Children are known and nurtured

Class sizes range from 16-25, with 2 lead teachers through 4th grade. Grades 5-8 are taught in two cohorts (5/6 and 7/8), each led by a team of four teachers with content expertise in language arts, social studies, math, and science.

An intentionally diverse, inclusive community

37% of students and 27% of faculty are members of racial and ethnic minority groups, and 25% of our families receive some level of need-based aid.

The PreK to 8 Advantage

Without the pressure and distractions of high school, our students grow into leadership roles and master the skills needed to succeed in high school and beyond.
