Our Commitment to Progressive Education

“Democracy has to be born anew every generation, and education is its midwife.”
— John Dewey

It remains to be seen how history will ultimately judge the past several weeks and coming years. Nevertheless, in an honest attempt to put politics aside, I believe that one can objectively argue that foundational elements of our democracy are, at best, being stressed. As a community nestled in close physical proximity to the three branches of government, it feels important to acknowledge our unique relationship to decisions and impact from change.

Founded in 1968 - another year of profound American change - Capitol Hill Day School has an enduring legacy of intentionality and authenticity in response to challenge and opportunity. As progressive educators, we are guided by our philosophical foundations. John Dewey’s belief in one fundamental purpose of education, as quoted above, is an ongoing call to action.

As we navigate this current moment, I believe our way forward is to be grounded in an unapologetic commitment to progressive education - to be Dewey's midwife to a strong democracy; to promote curiosity and open-mindedness. It is essential that we continue to educate children, in developmentally appropriate ways, to:

be discerning consumers of information.
listen to and explore differences with civility.
act with humility and appreciate vulnerability.
demonstrate compassion for others and a commitment to collaboration.
value all humans and identities.
seek justice in all things.
use their voice to speak truth to power.

As a community, fulfilling Dewey's call to action matters because soon enough, our children will be in positions of leadership and decision making. They will inherit the choices being made today and in the future. The fact that our 240 current students will be leading in the world having been educated in this community gives me great hope.

I have always felt a deep sense of gratitude for the privilege to be an educator. I take particular pride in being a part of the Capitol Hill Day School community - a community where everyone belongs. We are, and always have been, helping to build the next generation of democratic decision makers. The impact of that work is - and, more than ever, must be - profound.

Thank you for entrusting your children to our care and for your enduring support.
