Early Childhood (PreK - K)

Laying the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.

At Capitol Hill Day School, we believe every child is a capable, curious learner who comes to school with a natural drive to explore and make sense of the world.  Teachers create engaging environments that nurture children’s intellectual, social-emotional, and physical development. Through play, collaboration, and guided inquiry, children learn to ask questions, solve problems, and care for both the classroom and one another. Our Early Childhood students develop confidence, empathy, and the skills to grow academically and be thoughtful members of a community.

The Mixed-Age Model

Our Early Childhood classrooms are intentionally mixed-age, with prekindergarten and kindergarten students learning and growing together for two years. This model recognizes that chronological and developmental ages don’t always align in young children, allowing each student to be supported right where they are. Younger children benefit from learning alongside older peers, while older students gain confidence and leadership experience during their second year.

Emergent Curriculum in Early Childhood

Our Early Childhood program follows an emergent curriculum, where children’s natural curiosity leads the way. Teachers observe students’ interests and design meaningful projects that grow from their questions and discoveries. One year, students explored flight after becoming fascinated by airplanes; another year, a playground discovery of a bess beetle sparked an in-depth study of insects; and a shared love of stories led to creating their own little free library.

Each of these explorations naturally opens pathways into literacy, math, science, art, and social studies, encouraging children to ask questions, think deeply, and delight in the process of discovery. This joyful, inquiry-based approach not only makes learning meaningful in the moment but also lays a strong foundation for lifelong curiosity and future academic growth.

In The Classroom

Building connections, deepening learning.

We believe that to learn best, you need to feel connected: to subjects of study, sense of place, and one another. Intentional connections happen all the time in the classroom, across disciplines and grades, and as the result of teachers’ careful planning. Our educators are experts in their fields and the ages they teach, committed to making topics more relatable, fostering bonds with and among students, and broadening an individual and collective understanding of their place in the world. To see and be seen—that’s what we want for all our students—and that foundation is laid in Early Childhood.

A Day in the Life

Get a feel for what a day in Early Childhood is like with the following sample schedule.

Morning Meeting

Morning Meetings offer a daily space for students to connect, share, and engage with their classmates. During this routine, students greet their peers and teachers, take on responsibilities through classroom jobs, and review their schedule for the day.

Work Time

Students explore literacy, math, science, and more through hands-on projects guided by emergent curriculum, sometimes rotating through stations, sometimes working one-on-one with teachers—all tailored to spark curiosity and build skills every day.

Field Trip

Deeply rooted in the principles of progressive education, our Field Education Program reflects the belief that children learn best through authentic, hands-on experiences that connect classroom learning to the world beyond. EC South visited the DC Aquatic Resources Education Center to learn more about our local wildlife and how to cast a fishing line.

Specials

Our specials include art (performing and visual), library, physical education, and Spanish. Some of our specials are held in half-groups, providing students with more individualized attention and the opportunity to collaborate in smaller groups. During these times, the class is divided into two: one half attends one subject while the other attends another. Midway through the class period, they switch.

Lunch

Aside from the optional Pizza Wednesday, students bring a lunch each day and eat in classrooms before heading outside for recess.

Outdoor Play

Play is how young children make sense of the world. Through playful exploration, they practice problem-solving and social skills, building a strong foundation for learning.

Rest

For our youngest learners, rest happens daily, except on Wednesdays, when dismissal is at 2:00 p.m. This quiet time allows children to recharge their bodies and brains, supporting focus, growth, and readiness for learning.

Dismissal & After School Program

Students dismiss at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Many students stay for our After School Program, which is available until 6:00 p.m. daily.

By Kathryn Bauman-Hill, Early Childhood and Elementary Head

In my experience as an elementary student, learning math was solely focused on numbers. Yet our students in the Early Childhood and Elementary levels at Capitol Hill Day School experience a much deeper understanding of the whys behind the numbers.
