Elementary Grades (1-4)

The Elementary years expand upon the building blocks of Early Childhood and nurture those skills into confident, purposeful growth.

Our approach at the Elementary level emphasises intentionality and cross-curricular learning, thoughtful connections through authentic learning experiences, a growing understanding of self, and supporting students in taking personal responsibility for navigating healthy social interactions in their immediate community and beyond. Our goal is to develop life-long, self-reliant learners who can think critically, solve problems, and express themselves in a variety of ways.

In The Classroom

Building connections, deepening learning.

We believe that to learn best, you need to feel connected: to subjects of study, sense of place, and one another. Intentional connections happen all the time in the classroom, across disciplines and grades, and as the result of teachers’ careful planning. Our educators are experts in their fields and the ages they teach, committed to making topics more relatable, fostering bonds with and among students, and broadening an individual and collective understanding of their place in the world. Take a look at what's happening in our classrooms and beyond.

A Day in the Life

Get a feel for what a day in Elementary Grades is like with the following sample schedule.

Morning Meeting

Morning Meeting provides a daily opportunity for students to connect, share, and engage with their classmates and teachers. While it looks different across grade levels, it’s an important part of the daily routine that helps set the tone for the day. This time is an opportunity to introduce new ideas, such as exploring haiku structure during Second Grade’s poetry study.

Work Time

Students explore literacy, math, social studies, science, and more through hands-on projects guided by teachers. Learning may take place in small groups or as a full class, depending on the activity.

Specials

Our specials include art (performing and visual), library, physical education, and Spanish. Some of our specials are held in half-groups, providing students with more individualized attention and the opportunity to collaborate in smaller groups. During these times, the class is divided into two: one half attends one subject while the other attends another. Midway through the class period, they switch.

Field Trip

Deeply rooted in the principles of progressive education, our Field Education Program reflects the belief that children learn best through authentic, hands-on experiences that connect classroom learning to the world beyond. Pictured here, Fourth Grade is visiting Costco as part of their study of arrays in math.

Lunch & Recess

Aside from the optional Pizza Wednesday, students bring a lunch each day and eat in classrooms before heading outside for recess. We value outdoor time and the growth that comes from free play, and students enjoy 30 minutes of recess after lunch.

Connection Time

At Capitol Hill Day School, there is a strong emphasis on relationships. To nurture a collaborative and supportive environment, the schedule includes dedicated Connection Time, when students gather with peers across their division for shared activities and community-building.

Dismissal & After School Program

Students dismiss at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Many students stay for our After School Program, which is available until 6:00 p.m. daily. Enrichment activities and music lessons are also available through our After School Program.

In my experience as an elementary student, learning math was solely focused on numbers. Yet our students in the Early Childhood and Elementary levels at Capitol Hill Day School experience a much deeper understanding of the whys behind the numbers.
